Alexander Jannaeus 104-76  BCE.  Lead coin or token of 16.7 mm, 4.07 grams.

Obverse: Anchor, Greek around "King Alexander."

Reverse: "King Alexander" in Aramaic within circle of dots.....traces visible.

Reference: Hendin 6192.

Especially clear anchor side on this example. The reason for the issue of this unusual coin is not known, and because of the large number of them said to have been discovered in the Jordan Valley, it is possible they were not struck at a Jerusalem mint, but one East of the Jordan.

This lot is accompanied by a photo-authenticity receipt signed by David Hendin, author of Guide to Biblical Coins.
