1864 Civil War pocket song sheet and letter to Battle Creek, MI. The letter, from the aunt of a soldier named Steve, reads in part, “…Steve, my nephew…I am glad to hear that you like Salem I was afraid you would not like it I wish you was at home today four I am so lonsom but I hope you are injoying your self better than you would be at home. I hope you may never git dissatisfied I want you to send me your photograph in the next letter you write if you can git it taken…I hope you may live to git home and see us all again…” Letter measures 4” x 6.25” and runs 3pp. written in dark ink on lined stationery. The song sheet is datelined 1 May 1864 and contains the song, “The Drummerboy of Waterloo” which reads in part, “…When battle roused each war like band/ And carnage loud her trumpet blue / young Edwin left his native land / A drummer boy of Waterloo…” The song sheet measures 5” x 8” and runs 5pp. written in faded ink that runs light to dark. Both the letter and song sheet light foxing from age wear and are worn at the creases. Very good condition.
