Written in pencil and datelined ''Camp of the 183rd Pa, July 8th, 1865,'' letter reads in part: ''…I take my pencil in hand to let you know that I am well hoping that this may find you in the same I received your letter of the 5th and was glad to hear from you. If you will get your money I hope you will moved as soon as possible if you can spare me a dollar or 2 send it on. You say you was disappointed at my not being home I will be home in 20 day of July so I hope you won’t be in Gaffney Avenue. I send my love to sisters and brother. So no more at present But remain your affectionate Son…'' Jacob Marshall mustered into service in November 1863 and mustered out five days after writing this letter on 13 July 1865 at Washington D.C. The 183rd Pennsylvania saw heavy fighting at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Totopotomy, Cold Harbor, Strawberry Plains, Deep Bottom and Dabney’s Mill. Letter measures 4.75'' x 7.75'' and runs 2pp. Some foxing, otherwise near fine condition.
