Stephen R. Mallory letter signed as Secretary of the Navy for the Confederacy, dated 17 June 1861 shortly after the Civil War began. From Richmond, Mallory writes to John House in Knoxville, Tennessee, in part: "…no appointments of midshipmen will be made form civil life for some time. Appointments to that grade are made only from the midshipmen and acting midshipmen who resigned from the U.S. Navy in consequence of secession…[signed] S.R. Mallory". Letter measures 7.75" x 9.625". Folds, light wear and some smudging to writing, overall very good.
