Will Rogers Follies 1992 Marla Maples Broadway 7 pcs Palace Theatre Times Square

Historic Broadway Treasures from Saturday's Toys presents...  a collection of seven (7) items as obtained at the Thursday, August 6, 1992 performance of Marla Maples as "Ziegfeld's Favorite" in "The Will Rogers Follies" starring Mac Davis.  The production was staged at the historic Palace Theatre on Broadway... and received eleven nomination and six Tony Awards, including Best Musical.  Broadway legend Tommy Tune received two Tony Awards for his work on the prodution (chorographer and director / musical).  (notably, Academy Award nominee Tony Walton ("Mary Poppins") had also been nominated for a Tony Award for his stage design for "Will Rogers Follies").  This was Maples' opening week in the production as replacement to original cast member Cady Huffman.  The casting proved to be popular with audiences and soon her initial six-month contract was extended to a full year.  Maples' run came to a conclusion when she announced that she was pregnant and left the show in May 1993. The original Broadway production ran from May 1, 1991 thru September 5, 1993.

Having debuted in the role on Monday, August 3, 1992, Maples replaced outgoing performer Cady Huffman (final performance, Aug 1, 1992).  Huffman would go on to win a Tony Award for her show-stopping performance as "Ulla" in Mel Brooks' Broadway production of "The Producers" starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick (2001).

Ticket sales experienced an immediate increase in sales with the arrival of Maples in the "Follies" supporting role, fueled at least in part by the news headlines generated by her relationship with New York real estate mogul Donald Trump.  The two were married the following year.

The lot of seven (7) unique items includes the following:

  • Playbill magazine; Palace Theatre; August 1992; features "Who's Who in the Cast" reference for Marla Maples
  • Includes paper insert with name of that evening's understudy performer:  Jeanne Jones (Indian Soloist).
  • Souvenir Program (1991) from original cast production starring Keith Carradine and Cady Huffman.
  • Souvenir Program insert with updates to the cast as Mac Davis had replaced Carradine in the title role. Still featured future Tony Award winner Cady Huffman (The Producers) as "Ziegfeld's Favorite" (ended Aug 1, 1992)
  • Original ticket; $65.00 (Orchestra; Row G, Seat 107) for the August 6, 1992 performance (8pm) at the Palace Theatre (the historic Broadway theatre where Judy Garland was featured several times during the 1950's and 1960's).
  • Newspaper review by columnist Shirley Eder; August 9, 1992; Detroit Free Press
  • Newspaper article by USA Today reporter David Patrick Sterns; August 12, 1992

This one of a kind Broadway archive is in excellent condition; as preserved in dark storage since the performance.

Saturday’s Toys and Collectibles was founded in 1994 by Southern California author and media historian, Dave Mason. Soon after eBay's launch the following year, Saturday's Toys was among the first online specialists to strategize in embracing this rapidly developing technology. Having delivered over 15,000 coveted treasures since that time, Saturday's Toys is pleased to partner with researchers and collectors throughout the globe.

Today, online offerings of archival keepsakes are presented in celebration of the times that allow for family, friends and neighbors to join in memorable gatherings that nurture the strong connections that bind a community together. These treasures are affectionately represented by "Saturday's Toys." In that light we present our adopted motto (with a nod to the Sherman Brothers): "Oh, let's go fly a kite!"
