1974 FORD Mustang II original vintage advertisement + Styling Analysis Blueprint.

DESCRIPTION:

The new Ford Mustang II. It just may be the best news from Detroit in 9½ years.

Shown here is the new Mach 1.

One thing’s for sure. We don’t have to tell you what the original Mustang started when it was introduced 9½ years ago.

It was much more than a new car. It was a revolutionary idea: performance in a small package.

This year, the new Mach 1 is that same, special kind of car. On today’s kind of terms.

Size.

First of all (and probably most obvious of all), it’s smaller. A bit smaller than the original Mustang of 9½ years ago and more than 18 inches shorter than last year's model. And with a lot less weight to carry. Mustang II is an extremely nimble car.

A special engine for a special car. Standard.

Open the hood of a new Mach 1 and you'll see something different for an American-built production car: a V-6 engine that measures a very respectable 2.8 liters. Its short stroke tells you this is one new engine that’s no stranger to the big numbers on the tach.

With it you get the performance you want — without becoming the best customer at your neighborhood service station.

There’s still more. And that's standard too.

In the car: Mach 1 gives you an instrument panel with true gauges. Accurate gauges plus a large cluster of warning lights to keep you in charge. And get this, even a tach is standard.

Of course, you’d expect a 4-speed transmission in a car like this. And this one features top rail shifting.

A design that does away with external shifters and linkage rods. It's solid, smooth and quick.

And there’s more. Like rack-and-pinion steering (a plus in a performance car like this). And even creature comforts like full carpeting. European-type armrests and contoured front buckets.

Under the car: The '74 Mach 1 features a totally new suspension system. It’s rubber-buffered and designed to absorb distracting vibrations, but firm enough to keep you in close touch with the road. A front anti-sway bar is standard for ease of handling and control on curves.

Also standard is a new sub-frame that helps reduce engine vibration as well as the jolts and jars of front-wheel road shocks. Staggered rear shocks help keep you in control during hard braking and fast acceleration. Radial tires and front disc brakes are included, too. (Are there any other kind?)

On the car: A machine that feels different should look different. So we gave the Mach 1 a special paint treatment with blacked-out rear deck and lower body. Dual racing mirrors and styled steel wheels are also standard.

Get ready for the options.

With all that we’ve just been through, there are still a few ways left to make a Mach 1 look and handle even better. Here goes:

Traction-lok differential.
CR70 Steel-belted radial raised white letter tires.
Competition suspension that gives you heavy-duty springs, adjustable shock absorbers, rear anti-sway bar.
Digital clock.
Leather-wrapped steering wheel.
A Rallye Package that includes all the above, plus an extra cooling package and sport exhaust with bright tips.
Anti-theft alarm system.
AM/FM Stereo with tape player.
Forged aluminum wheels.

Finally.

The Mach 1 is just one of 4 new Mustang II models. There’s the elegant Ghia (shown below), classic two-door hardtop, sporty three-door 2 + 2 with convenient, fold-down rear seat.

They’re all at your Ford dealer now.

Mach 1 shown is equipped with optional Forged Aluminum Wheels. Vinyl insert. Bodyside Moldings. Air conditioning. AM/FM Stereo with tape player. Flipper Rear Windows. Luxury interior and Rallye Package.

THE NEW MUSTANG IN AN OLD CORRAL.

The Mustang was the success story of the 1960’s. The new, small-sized ’74 version is probably a better car but 10 years is a long time to wait for an encore.

When the first Ford Mustang debuted almost a decade ago, the car was such a radical departure from anyihing else on the road that it earned its master, Ford’s Lee lacocca, the cover of Time Magazine. Life magazine was so impressed with the world’s first "ponycar" that it put out a full-color spread, heralding it as "a true sports car."

Dan Gurney drove a prototype and announced in another magazine, “This car will run the rubber off a Triumph or an MG. It has the feel of a 2-plus-2 Ferrari.”

If Dazzling Dan was impressed, he had good reason. The new Mustang he blasted around the track came with a 289-cubic-inch. 271-horsepower V-8 with four on the floor. It had a 108-inch wheelbase and overall was only 181.6 inches long. Zero-to-60 was accomplished in 7.1 seconds.

And the basic model sold for an unheard-of $2,368 (FOB Detroit), putting it in the price range of austere economy cars.

And it sold like hula hoops, lacocca was right: the World War II babies had come of car-buying age and Mustang was what they wanted -smaller, sportier cars with both performance and luxury.

Those other guys in Detroit picked up the ponycar baton and pretty soon it was a crowded, quick-changing market. The showplace became even more cluttered — and competitive-with the advent of the mini-ponycar, the subcompact, like Pinto and Maverick.

And here we are, 10 years after the brash Mustang arrived on the scene. We'll reserve our opinions on the new car’s performance until we get hold of one. But briefly, here are the essentials of the new 74 Mustang:

Ford obviously is attempting to return to the original small-size concept from which it probably never should have strayed. In fact, the new Mustang’s overall length is shorter than the original.

The horsepower, due to many obvious factors, like emissions and insurance, is no longer emphasized. While the big '64 Mustang V8 boasted 210 horses (271 in high performance form) the ’74 will come with a top of 110. Today, "big’’ translates to a 2.8-liter V-6, an uprated version of the 2.6-liter engine sold in the Capri. The basic engine will be a 2.3-liter overhead cam four-cylinder, producing 90 horses.

Performancewise, the V-6 may compare closely with the Datsun 240Z. Ford ran through a series of 10-second speed tests. The new Mustang traveled 500 feet in that time, compared with 478 feet for the sporty Toyota Celica and 540 feet for the 240Z. (Ford expects the base engine to perform well because the emissions equipment is built in and not added on.)

There will be five models to choose from: three fastbacks and two "notch-backs." One notchback will be the base model, the other called a ‘’Grande" model. The three fastbacks will have a third door in the rear. One will be a two-seater, the other a Mach I performance model and the third a standard four-pas-senber fastback.

Sizewise, as we said, the new Mustang is smaller than the original. It has a 96-inch wheelbase (13 inches shorter than ’73) and 175 inches overall (19 inches shorter than the 73). While it is smaller than the original, the interior front seating is said to be more comfortable.
And that, obviously, is because less room is required for the engine compartment with the smaller engines.

Ford people have told us that contrary to popular belief, this shorter car has a smoother ride than the longer model. The secret, they say, is the new sub frame and suspension geometry up front.

And there are those who say there is a lot of Pinto, Maverick and even Thunderbird design included in the new Mustang. We'll let you be the judge. ■

Regardless of pure styling considerations, the 74 Mustang has it over its predecessor like a tent as far as balanced performance goes. True, it will not quite match the all-out raw acceleration of the old 289 V8, but then, the 2.8 liter V6 is not slow by any measure. Also, the car's now refined front suspension geometry gives stock, what Shelby used to add on.
