Description
This is a choice, crisp uncirculated, "Cincuenta" or “50” Centavos note from the "El Estado de Sonora". It was authorized by the decree of August 1913, but is dated January 1, 1915 at Hermosillo, in the State of Sonora, Mexico. The State of Sonora borders Arizona.
In 1915 Mexico was in revolt and in midyear President Woodrow Wilson of the United States switched his support from Pancho Villa to Venustiano Carranza. Unknown to Villa, who was about to attack the town, Wilson let troops of Carranza board trains in Texas, go to Douglas, Arizona, re-cross the border and reinforce the town of Agua Prieta. After the battle, Carranza became President of Mexico and Villa launched his famed murderous raid across the border into New Mexico. Wilson then sent General Pershing and his young aide George Patton south of the border to chase him, but they failed to catch him.
Like the plethora of numismatic collectibles produced during the United States Civil War, there were many emergency, wartime issues of currency in Mexico at this time. Quickly disappearing, they make a fascinating and varied collection.
