ARTIST: ,Late 19thC, undetermined, probably British School SUBJECT: Several yachts in competition around a race marshal MEDIUM: Watercolour on paper or card SIGNATURE: Lower left indistinctly initialled FH/CFH DATE: Ascribed to the matte, 1899 and commensurate with condition and the backboard and gallery label SIZE: Visible painting 31.5 x 22.5cm (12.25 x 8.75 inches), Frame 61 x 51.5cm (24 x 20 inches), depth 4cm (1.5 inches) PROVENANCE: British Estate sale, private collection; original gallery label for James McClure and Son, Glasgow, Scotland art dealer’ affixed to the back of the frame’ original backboard CONDITION: Very good for its age; ,the matte over the work is stained following years of display but has not encroached to the artwork; the inscription on the matter has also faded; the painting itself is fairly clean with minor marks noticed on close inspection; we think the frame surround was replaced, retaining the original backboard and glaze and the work was probably cleaned at that time FRAME: Mostly original to the work, probably a replaced surround

An interesting work, we present a charming marine landscape in watercolours, with yachts in a race overlooked by a marshal. The painting is indistinctly initialled lower left, FH or CFH, also ascribed and dated on the matte over the work which has faded with time and is ineligible, apart from the date of 1899. A British hand in our opinion, of the late Victorian School, our research has been incisive. The painting was retailed by a leading Glasgow Scotland dealer, James McClure and Son, with the original label to verso. Well worth spending time to research further Presented in very good condition in mostly its original frame, this painting will look fabulous displayed
