Unit - Panzer Regiment 1 (the Panther Battalion), 1st Panzer Division - "LAH" (also called LSSAH) - 1st SS Panzer Divison - Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler - began as Hitler's personal bodyguard. It was initially the size of a regiment and then grew into an elite division-sized unit. The term Leibstandarte was derived from Leibgarde - an old German translation of "Guard of Corps" or personal bodyguard of a military leader.

Campaign - France 1944 - The LSSAH was positioned north of the River Seine to counter any landing in the area of Pas de Calaise so the first units didn't arrive in Normandy until after the Allied invasion. By 4 July the I SS Panzer Corps was reformed and consisted of the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler and the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend. They were involved in the defense of Caripiquet village in Operation Windsor. On 12 July the LSSAH were involved in the Caen south sector from Maltot in the west to the Caen-Falaise road in the east. On 14-15 July, LSSAH pulled back to an area between Ifs and Cintheaux. During Operation Goodwood, the Division had 59 Panzer IVs, 46 Panthers and 35 StuG IIIs. The Panther Battalion, I/1st SS Panzer regiment, engaged with the British 29th Armoured Brigade of the British 11th Armoured Division. The body of the Leibstandarte was rushed to the front from Falaise, where it was being held in reserve. The British pushed their attack on 19 July and came under fire from the Panthers who had taken up a position on the Bourguebus Ridge. Later, during Operation Luttich, Von Kluge followed Hitler's orders to detach part of the German armor from the main front and create a surprise striking force in early August with XLVII Panzer Corps that included the 2nd Panzer Division, part of the 1st SS Panzer Division, the 2nd SS Panzer Division and the 116th Panzer Division (also supported by infantry battle groups with remnants of Panzer Lehr). The LSSAH and other divisions went on the attack on 7 August. The 1st SS Panzer Regiment and two Panzergrenadier Battalions were used for the attack. The 2nd SS Panzer Division recaptured Mortain and Peiper's Kampfgruppe made it to Bourlopin but was unable to capture Avranches. The LSSAH became trapped in the Falaise Pocket but some units escaped on 22 August, leaving behind all their armor and artillery. The LSSAH suffered 5,000 casualties during the Normandy campaign.
