An excellent copy of a
scarce posthumous account of the famous essayist and historian. Andrew James Symington (1825-1898) was a
Scottish author and essayist from Paisley. His publications include Harebell
Chimes, 1848; Genevieve, and Other Poems, 1851; The Beautiful in Nature, Art,
and Life, 1857; Pen and Pencil Sketches of Faröe and Iceland, 1862; The
Reasonableness of Faith, 1870; Hints to our Boys, 1884; Poems, and other works.
He also edited Blackie's series of Men of Light and Learning, and contributed
to a large number of magazines in Great Britain and the United States. The present work was first printed as a
series of articles in the New York Independent.
The book open with a moving account of Carlyle’s funeral and thereafter
covers many aspects of his life ‘from personal intercourse, extending over many
years’ with the author.
