People of a certain age will remember film strips like this. They were used in classrooms like a slide show but instead of
individually mounted slides, they are on a short roll of film with each
roll stored in a small metal can. A special projector was required to
show the strips.
That's what I have for you
here. A 35 mm format film strip called Silver Knee Buckles, the story of Cynthia Smith, a young girl caught up in the American Revolutionary war, who decides to personally get an audience with General Cornwalis in order to get her family's cow returned after British soldiers took it from them. The story demonstrates her bravery, persistence and success in not only getting the cow returned, but impressing the general so much that he even offers her a gift—a pair of Silver Knee Buckles.
The title image credits Mary Gibson as the artist who did the many illustrations. The
label on the can credits American Film Service of Chicago. The date of
it is not listed but others in the hoard of strips are from the 1920s.
This strip is high quality. There are a few scratches here and there and a broken sprocket hole near the beginning but no bad problems or repairs. It will project well and easily. 34 frames, short leader, short tail. The
images are clear with excellent contrast.
The little steel can is tarnished
on the outside but shiny-bright on the inside. It has done a good job of preserving the film.
I
have photographed several frames on a light table so you can see the
title slide and the some of the ones following it.
Please note: I have two copies of this and they are essentially
identical except for one detail. One of them has a film credit, first
frame, the other does not. The credit frame lists the strip as being part of a
series called "Primary Reading by Esther Bjoland, American Film
Service." The second strip starts with the title slide, Silver Knee
Buckles. Please let me know which of these you prefer upon purchase, or if you want both copies,
thank you.
