Face of An Island:  Leigh Richmond Miner's Photographs of Saint Helena Island

by Edith M. Dabbs

R.L. Bryan Company, 1970, Columbia, SC

RARE photographic book from early 1900s and 1920s photographs of Saint Helena Island residents and Black students of the Penn School, a school that was founded during the Civil War for the education of the formerly enslaved.

Poignant portraits of formerly enslaved, wide vistas, fields, and shores of Saint Helena Island.   This area is a center of the Gullah Geechee culture -- these photographs chronicle this unique culture around 1906-1908 and in the 1920s.

Beautiful, large coffee table style book.
