Disneyland Secretaries Café Orléans 1988 Dapper Dans New Orleans Square Disney

Classic Disneyland Cast Member Treasures from Saturday's Toys presents...  a vintage issue of the Disneyland Line cast member newsletter

Vol. 20, No. 17 - April 29, 1988

Features the extensive 1988 remodel of Café Orléans in New Orleans Square... along with the temporary transformation of the Dapper Dans into "Danny and the Dappers" in keeping with the park's "Blast to the Past" features that year.

The lead article describes the shift from a waitress service to a buffeteria / deli style of operation... as the kitchen was expanded into the space previously used for Lafitte's Silver Shop.  Subsequently, a window was opened to allow passing guests to sneak a peak into the Cafe's kitchen.  The article also announces, without much fanfare, the arrival of the restaurant's pastry shop outdoor counter service... known as "La Petite Patisserie" (closed in 2006 when it was permanently re-integrated into the restaurant's full kitchen).

The Dapper Dans is also featured with Rick Allan (tenor), Shelby Grimm (lead), Jerry Siggins (baritone) and Michael Geiger (bass).  The group also was reassigned to entertain at unique special events such as a pirate-themed evening that was part of the park's "Enchanted Evenings" exclusive events.

Bob Bergstrom and the "I Have an Idea" program are profiled. Several of the "Secretaries" of Disneyland are surveyed for their perspective on what makes a good secretary, including:  Diann Aspen, Tari Sands, Janet Conley, Barbara Malloy, Norma Umphress, Virginia Zlaket, Jeannette Sanderson, Neida Herrera, Angie Gonzales and Myrna Crawford.

Retirees included ticket hostess Pat Ross... and costume seamstress Atsuko Kuyama.

The issue also unceremoniously announces the arrival of "The Disney Gallery" and the availability of original art from the Disneyland archives... including Marc Davis, Eyvind Earle, Herb Ryman, John Hench, Mary Blair and Sam McKim.

One of the more interesting issues in recent memory...

Saturday’s Toys and Collectibles was founded in 1994 by Southern California author and media historian, Dave Mason. Soon after eBay's launch the following year, Saturday's Toys was among the first online specialists to strategize in embracing this rapidly developing technology. Having delivered over 15,000 coveted treasures since that time, Saturday's Toys is pleased to partner with researchers and collectors throughout the globe.

Today, online offerings of archival keepsakes are presented in celebration of the times that allow for family, friends and neighbors to join in memorable gatherings that nurture the strong connections that bind a community together. These treasures are affectionately represented by "Saturday's Toys." In that light we present our adopted motto (with a nod to the Sherman Brothers): "Oh, let's go fly a kite!"
