The Story of the "Lucky Loonie"
At the Salt Lake Olympics in 2002, both the men's and women's Canadian hockey teams won gold medals!

Trent Evans, the Edmonton ice maker, had used a Canadian dime to mark centre ice on the concrete floor, but after making a few layers, he placed a larger coin, the 1987 Loon Dollar as the marker.  Then he finished flooding the ice, with the Loonie embedded under the remaining layers of ice.

The Canadian Loon Dollar buried in centre ice proved to be a lucky charm, as Team Canada won 3-2 in the women's gold medal game.  Three days later the Canadian men's team defeated the U.S., with a 5-2 victory,  winning its first Olympic gold medal in men's hockey since 1952!

The first "lucky loonie" now rests in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Canada.

Since then, the Royal Canadian Mint has issued special $1 coins, with the iconic loon in various poses, along with the official emblem of the Canadian Olympic Team.  These coins serve as a good luck charm for Canadian athletes competing at Olympic and Paralympic Games, and hopefully will also bring luck to anyone who carries one!
