PLEASE NOTE that at this time, the post office is VERY VERY slow and if you need this by a specific time, you'll need to select Priority Mail or it may take a couple weeks or longer to get there. I know it's more expensive, but it's the only way to insure a quick delivery...

TALKING HEADS
SPEAKING IN TONGUES

LIMITED EDITION VINYL LP
Rauschenberg Design - See below!

Speaking in Tongues is the fifth studio album by Talking Heads, released on June 1, 1983. Frontman David Byrne said, as a partial explanation of the album's title, "I originally sang nonsense, and ... made words to fit that. That worked out all right"

<--- Byrne designed the standard cover for the general release of the album - BUT - Artist Robert Rauschenberg won a Grammy Award for his work on the limited-edition LP version, which features a clear vinyl disc in clear plastic packaging along with three clear plastic discs printed with similar collages in three different colors.

“I approached Bob Rauschenberg in the mid-’80s to design a cover… I had recently seen some of his black-and-white photo collages... and thought they were amazing, and I wondered what he would do with an LP cover,” Byrne wrote in an op-ed obituary for the artist, published as Bob The Builder in the New York Times in May, 2008.

Rauschenberg agreed, but didn’t simply want to provide an illustration for the standard 12” cardboard sleeve.
“His package consisted of a conceptual collage piece in which the color separation layers — the cyan, magenta and yellow images that combined to make one full-color image — were, well, deconstructed. Only by rotating the LP and the separate plastic disc could one see — and then only intermittently — the three-color images included in the collage. It was a transparent explication of how the three-color process works, yet in this case, one could never see all the full-color images at the same time, as Bob had perversely scrambled the separations.”

OFFERED HERE IS THAT EDITION!

"For Speaking in Tongues, Rauschenberg referenced the three-color printing process by creating separate layers of cyan, magenta, and yellow. Each disc sported a collage of images, including a wrecked car, a highway billboard, and a suburban bedroom, that could be spun to produce different effects. “In this case,” Byrne noted, 'one could never see all the full-color images at the same time, as Bob had perversely scrambled the separations.'

It wasn’t easy to find a suitable place to package the record. In fact, guitarist and keyboardist Jerry Harrison spent six months in the early 1980s searching for a business that could vacu-form a clear vinyl LP. The band eventually employed the services of an Oscar Meyer hot dog packaging company. This arduous production process may have contributed to the album’s lengthy release period—although the Talking Heads’ previous four albums had been released over four consecutive years, it was another three years before Speaking in Tongues hit the stands.

Due to production difficulties, the Rauschenberg-designed cover was printed in a limited-edition run of 50,000. (Byrne himself designed an alternate cover for the remaining million or so album sleeves, a pared-down, abstract painting in blue and yellow.) Fans could own a Rauschenberg of their own for just $12.98; super-fans could pay $100 for one of the 1,000 deluxe editions signed by both Byrne and Rauschenberg and sold through art galleries.

Andy Warhol himself purchased the album at Tower Records in the East Village in 1983. His diary entry from July 11th of that year mentions that Rauschenberg “was upset because he only got $2,000” for the job: “And I told him he was right, he should’ve gotten $25,000!"

Yes, I know, this is not cheap, nor is it very common.. I am not as greed as some selling on eBay who are asking $500 or more, but I am also not going to give this away either. My copy is not sealed, but it has never been played either. The pictures you see were gleaned from various places on the internet, but there is no difference between what you see and what you will get.

It is packaged in a yellow clamshell as you see at the top with the rotating discs, and has the clear vinyl album as you see just above to the right.

Rauschenberg may not be to your artisitic liking, but regardless, he is one of America's masterpiece artists of the 20th century. If you're not familiar with him, LOOK HIM UP! You couldn't buy a limited edition of his work for under six-seven figures! This one, in excellent condition is far less! GRAB IT before someone else does!

Indeed, here is another of my rare vinyl offerings! I try to price my albums fairly in the hopes that you will come back for all your vinyl needs. This is a fine collectible copy and will be shipped in a box with plenty of packing, insured against loss or damage... Enjoy...

A NOTE ABOUT ME: I used to own and operate a high-end Audio Salon in the 80s/90s located in Pasadena, CA for over 12 years and never lost my appetite for High Fidelity audio. UNLESS STATED, most of the audio equipment and music I sell comes from my personal collection or stuff I've purchased but never got around to using. I am pretty picky about what I own so if it was good enough for me, you'll most likely be ecstatic with your purchase. I don't like surprises when I buy things from auctions any more than you do. I promise everything I know about this item is in this description.

It is a record I am very proud of...

Why Are My Shipping & Handling Costs a Bit Higher than Other Sellers? Please Read on...

GUARANTEED DELIVERY OR YOUR MONEY BACK!
I really DO CARE about when and how your product gets to you. Because the post office is so incredibly inept, I ONLY SHIP domestic packages INSURED, which is AUTOMATICALLY INCLUDED in the shipping cost, and that is not free as the post office charges for it. If your parcel gets lost OR damaged in freight, your item will be replaced if one is available OR you will be completely refunded!

IMPORTANT MONEY SAVING TIP! If you are buying more than one of my items and would like to SAVE MONEY by COMBINING SHIPPING costs, I will be happy to do so, but eBay has now made it more difficult to get discounts by confusing people with "Buy it Now" and "Add to Cart" options on non-auction style pages. If you are buying one item from a seller use the Buy it Now. BUT IF YOU WANT COMBINED or FREE SHIPPING, DO NOT USE THE BUY IT NOW button! Instead, select ADD TO CART. Then use your BACK button on your browser and select the other items you want that qualify using ADD TO CART each time. When you are finished, look for the shopping cart icon at the top right corner of your eBay page and click on it. Find the blue button which reads COMMIT TO BUY & SEND REQUEST. Once done, the items will be held and I will create a single invoice with either combined or free shipping. NOTE: I cannot retroactively go back and combine items that are not purchased in this manner so PLEASE PAY ATTENTION.

Once you receive your invoice, payment is expected promptly! All of the payment info you need will be listed including multiple shipment options.

Since I am a legitimate business, California deliveries will require sales tax.

PAYMENT OPTIONS:

  • I accept Credit Cards, eChecks and electronic transfers with .
  • Unfortunately, direct bank transfers are not offered due to cost and security concerns.
  • As I reside in the USA, all payments must be made in US Dollars & Cents.

SHIPPING ADDRESSES: IMPORTANT!! I can ONLY SHIP to the address as noted in PAYPAL'S "TRANSACTION DETAILS". If you want it shipped to an alternate location, you will need to register that address BEFORE paying or it will be shipped to the registered address.

SHIPPING COSTS: Shipping costs will be determined by weight & destination! You may click on the SHIPPING & PAYMENT tab found at the top of the page, just under the item's picture for all shipping options to all destinations both domestic and international. There you will find drop down boxes for your location and you can then use the shipping calculator to determine the correct cost for where you live.

REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT SHIPPING TIMES:

I have no control over the US Post Office. I get the items packed and shipped within the prescribed time and all packages are picked up by my mail carrier. What happens after that is beyond my control...

  • International deliveries usually arrive within 1-2 weeks but CAN take up to a month! Faster shipping is available on request, but expensive.
  • Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. You can check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying.
  • Finally, we do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts"; it is illegal and immoral.
