KLAUS WEISS, born on February 17, 1942 in Gevelsberg, learned drums as an autodidact at the age of ten. At 16 he became a member of the “Jazzopaters”; Between 1960 and 1961 he played drums with the “Tremble Kids”, and in 1961 he briefly joined “Mr. Adams Jazzopaters” and then played in the Klaus Doldinger Quartet (Passport) for four years. In 1965, '66 and '67 KLAUS WEISS was named the best German drummer in the TWEN Jazz Poll; In 1966 he received first place. Prize at the international competition for modern jazz in Vienna. Between 1965 and 1967 he led his own trio, after which WEISS played in the Lehn Big Band of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk.
From 1968 onwards, KLAUS WEISS worked as a freelancer and became increasingly involved in various jazz-rock projects, of which he realized the Klaus Weiss Quartet and the Klaus Weiss Orchestra in 1971 in addition to the groups Niagara and Sunbirds. The Klaus Weiss Orchestra received particular attention, “which can certainly be placed in a row with the great American jazz big bands” (JAZZ PODIUM). On November 20, 1971, the international big band recorded the double album “I Just Want To Celebrate” in the “Domicile” in Munich, whose jazz-rock-pop repertoire (“Eleanor Rigby”, “Superstars”, “Get It On”) ) was based on the arrangements of Bill Holman, Thad Jones, Phil Wilson and Don Piestrup. The 16-piece orchestra performed at the Süddeutscher Rundfunk, also at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival and - in the spring of 1972 - during a concert tour for the Bavarian Radio.
