Description
This is a nice, low mintage, sharp edged, proof or proof-like, silver, “Crown” or “Silver Dollar” size, "Commemorative" 5 Shillings from the "Union of South Africa". These were struck in 1960 only to mark the 50th anniversary of the “Union of South Africa”.
The “Union of South Africa” in 1910 was a newly formed country created by unifying four previously separate territories: Cape Colony, Natal, Transvaal, and the Orange River Colony. It was officially formed on May 31, 1910, after years of negotiations following the Second Boer War. It aimed to unite British and Afrikaner populations under a new, self-governing dominion within the British Empire. It excluded Black South Africans and other non-whites from voting rights.
Weight: 28.21 Grams, 38.8 Millimeters, .500 Silver. Mintage: Proof: 3,360. Proof-Like: 22,000.
