MYTHS ABOUT THE MORGANS OF TREDEGAR HOUSE, SOUTH WALES

Busting the History Fraudsters

WILLIAM CROSS,  FSA Scot

The National Trust’s take over of Tredegar House has won the hearts of many since 2012 when they acquired a 50-year lease on the remarkable seventeenth century red brick building, the home of the Morgans for over 500 years, together with its 90 acres of surrounding parkland. To enable the public to enjoy its wonderful history and gardens, the combination of staff and volunteers at the House are keen to share stories radiant in their glory and love for the Morgan family to visitors from all over the World. As custodians, guides, conservators, gardeners, archivists etc., a small army presides over the maintenance of the mighty Morgan homestead and the exploits of its range of characters, retelling their history of triumphs, disasters and eccentricities in the making of the name coupled with the family’s contribution to Wales, Britain and beyond. However, the National Trust’s prestige as guardians of the house, one of the stars of the organisation in Wales. which, until now, has shone brightly risks being dimmed. Over the years the Author William Cross who has produced/ co-produced seven books on the Morgans has observed a sharp decline in integrity and standards with regard to the information given to the public. Even the volunteers confess to being confused about which stories are true and which are tall tales . Why ‘celebrate’ the family with instances of poor explanations, unsourced stories and anecdotes about the Morgan family?. Visitors to Tredegar House don’t need to hear fraudulent or fake history, especially in the constant recounting of discredited tales. In this new book the myths and lies are finally quashed..
