Super fine! Believe the story is the tape recorder was purchased new and never taken out of the box

However, the recorder does not seem to play tapes properly, when tested - I turned the volume up on a tape, I could hear the music lightly, but could hear a loud hum!

Please understand this recorder probably sat in that box for decades - components may need to be cleaned or changed. The recorder is sold as is / not working.
