*** the USS Constitution ***

a 150-Year Anniversary FDC

On a Strictly One-of-a-Kind FDC

ABOUT THIS COVER

The feature stamp on this hand drawn, hand painted . . . and Strictly One-of-a-Kind . . . all-over, add on FDC, by Ben Kraft, is the PO’s 1947 150 Year Anniversary of the USS Constitution 3¢ stamp, Scott # 951.

About the inspiration for the feature stamp : the USS Constitution was first launched in 1797 . . . and, hence, this cover's status as a 150 Year Anniversary FDC. It bears The distinction of being the world's oldest battleship still in existence.

But the USS Constitution real claim-to-fame takes us back to the War of 1812, when the U.S. had to face Great Britain once again for firing at U.S. ships which our nation was using to engage in trade with other European countries. As the PO’s 400-page 2012 Guide to U.S. Stamps explains it, An untested U.S. Navy faced seemingly impossible odds against a Royal Navy the ruled the world’s seas. In August, just 2 months into the war, the powerful frigate USS Constitution stunned Britain by defeating HMS Guerriere. Thus, was born the legend of Old Ironsides . . . which those aboard the previously undefeated ship, HMS Guerriere called the USS Constitution because of the non-stop rain of explosive cannon balls which they threw at the USS Constitution, but didn’t seem to faze the ship at all. It was sort of like a naval miracle.

The feature stamp, itself : on this 3¢ stamp, we see this ground-breaking ship being launched from Massachusetts' Boston Harbor, 227 years ago, as of today.

About the hand drawn and hand painted cachet : on his magnificently hand drawn and beautifully hand painted cachet, Mr. Kraft gives us a captivating view of the heavily-masted USS Constitution on route to its next naval adventure, and all this under the dome of 13 stars, symbolizing our nation's never-say-die, 13 Original Colonies.

About this cover overall condition : since this cover was designed on a 77-year-old envelope, let's take a look at its overall condition together. And as far as covers, like this, which it has been sailing atop Hobby's waters for 77 years, this cover is in very good condition. First off, the envelope's 4 corners are well defined for a cover that's been sailing our Hobby's ocean for close to 8 decades. Secondly, this envelope has no bend, smears, or anything of that nature to be concerned about. Third, yes, admittedly, this cover does have  some flap-mark issues, but nothing "over the top,in my humble opinionAnd finally, the cover's actual flap is unsealed.

About the cancellation site : and, aptly enough, this cover was canceled in Boston, Massachusetts, aboard the USS Constitution.

The Scarcity Factor : and, as noted above, this is a Strictly One-of-a-Kind FDC.

All in all, most definitely, an FDC with a most commanding presence.
