Painted tin or Toleware is a popular heirloom craft which originated with the early American pioneers. Each pioneer brought with him to America many of his native customs, including patterns and symbols. Tin items were used extensively in everyday routines and life. Each tin item had to be painted to prevent rust. While painting the items, the pioneers developed a type of Brush Stroke painting which could be done quickly and simply. Two basic techniques were Brush Stroke Painting and Freehand Bronzing.
