ABOUT THIS COVER

The feature stamps on this hand drawn, thermographed, and individually hand painted FDC, by Bernard Goldberg, are all 10 of  the PO's 1991 50 Year Anniversary of the Major World War II Events from 1941 stamps, Scott #s 2697 A through J.

About the inspiration for the feature stamps beginning in 1991 and concluding in 1995, the PO cranked out 10 stamps per year to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of the major events from World War II, on a year-by-year basis. Since these covers were canceled in 1994, they commemorate the heroic exploits of our World War II servicemen that occurred in 1944 --- and hence, these covers' status as 50-year anniversary FDCs.

The specific stamps : that being said, let me now list the specific stamps for you --- in Scott order :

  4. Scott # 2559-D : the Atlantic Charter Sets Military Goals (bottom row, middle stamp . . . and the inspiration for this cachet.

About the hand drawn, thermographed, and hand painted cachet : as noted above . . . in my Scott # 2559-D sentence . . . it was the Atlantic Charter meeting which was the inspiration for Mr. Goldberg's sharply colored cachet. Indeed, in August of 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and British Prime Minister, Winston Chruchill secretly met in Newfoundland to discuss strategies and goals concerning Hitler's plan to consume most of Europe. A chief point of discussion was the importance of coming to the aid of Overrun Nations invaded by the Nazis, as well as making oceans safe to bring aid to the countries in need. All the issues which they agreed to came to be known as The Atlantic Charter

And it is on his vibrantly colored cachet that Mr. Goldberg spotlights the prominent presence of these two world leaders who mapped out the plan to defeat Nazi, Germany.

About the cancellation site : and for this one, Mr. Goldberg obtained a pair of exceptionally positioned official bar cancels from Phoenix, Arizona.

About the Scarcity Factor : please note that Mr. Goldberg made only 76 of these covers, with this particular one having been numbered 76/76 . . . the very last one made.

All in all : this is Mr. Goldberg's philatelic high-five to the men who the celebrated TV broadcaster and newsman, Tom Brokaw, labeled The Greatest Generation in his best-selling book of the same title.

INTERESTING TIDBIT: according to a masterfully written, and very comprehensive, 2-page article written by Mark Gereb for the July 15, 2011 issue of the Hobby's publication, First Days, Brooklyn-born, Bernard Goldberg --- who, sadly, passed away on April of 2011, at age 94 --- came on to the philatelic scene in 1950 when he began collecting stamps. However, it wasn't until 30 years later, in 1980, when Mr. Goldberg began his illustrious hand painted cachet making career with the release of his 1980 Christmas stamp, Scott # 1843. The article goes on to paint an all-around portrait of Goldberg as a devoted military man, who was honorably discharged from the armed services in 1945 . . . as a dedicated family man, who married his life-long wife in 1943 . . . as a professional graphic artist, who worked in the entertainment industry, where he did work for the likes of stars such as Bob Hope and Burt Reynolds . . . and just so, so much more about this stellar cachet maker. Finally, Mr. Gereb closes his written tribute to Bernard Goldberg with the soulful word, We will all miss his friendship and artwork, while emphasizing how fortunate the collecting public was for the 30 years he spent with the AFDCS.
