An early, original issue of " Saturday Night ", a popular literature periodical published in Philadelphia from 1865 until 1901.

Serialized literature plus some essays; this issue contains a number of readings.

1.  The Mountain Spirit or Last War Path of Cochise ( continued from previous issue )
by Major Alfred Rochefort
( Cochise [ ca. 1805 – June 8, 1874 ] was a leader of the Chiricahua Apache. During the Apache Wars he led an uprising that began in 1861 and persisted until a peace treaty was negotiated in 1872. Cochise County in Arizona is named after him. )
The author, Major Alfred Rochefort Calhoun (1844-1912),  was an American soldier , author, journalist and critic. Born in Kentucky , he served in the Union army during the U.S. Civil War. He served throughout the entire war. Wounded and captured , he was held at Libby Prison in Richmond Virginia , until he escaped through a tunnel which he and his fellow inmates dug.
After the Civil War ended, he traveled West and worked as a Railway survey artist, photographer, and writer. He was a member of the Union Pacific survey in Arizona , New Mexico and Colorado in the 1860s. He befriended Kit Carson and other famous scouts and pioneers , and was known for his descriptive acounts of skirmishes with Indians in the Far West.
He wrote several books and contributed to periodicals in the 1800s.

2.  Was it a Ghost ?

A story of the appearance of a ghostly figure in the uniform of a soldier.

" Helen Forrest Graves " was the pseudonym of Lucy Randall Comfort.
She was born Lucy Ann Randall on February 23, 1836, in Norwich, New York. Her earliest identified work was a poem titled " The Consumptive " which appeared in August 1849. She wrote under a pseudonym " Helen Forest (or Forrest ) Graves " for periodicals, etc., starting in the during the 1860s.
 She died at her home in Pleasantville , New York on December 11, 1914.

3.  What is Missed Abroad
by Dr. Robert Shelton Mackenzie
An essay by on the foods he misses when he travels in Europe ( including Peaches , Watermelon , Indian Corn , and Macaroni and Polenta ).
Born in Limerick County, Ireland in 1809, Mackenzie studied medicine in Cork and graduated at Dublin , and though he passed his medical examination, he never actually practiced medicine . He worked as a writer and editor in England until 1852, when he moved to the United States , first at New York City and later Philadelphia , PA.

4.  Mythological Sketches : Apollo

Clara Clayton was apparently a writer in the 1800s, however " Clara Clayton " appears as a fictionalized character in the film " Back to the Future Part III ", where she is married to Doc Brown and is the mother of Jules and Verne Brown.
In the movie " Clara Clayton " was a schoolteacher in 1885 and meets Marty and Doc when they save her from almost falling into Shonash Ravine.
