Agarwood (Gaharu Wood)
Origin of Wood ~ Malaysia
Malaysian Agar wood (Gaharu wood, Oud, Oudh, Jinko, Eagle wood or Aloes wood) is a dark heartwood with a distinctive, aromatic fragrance that forms in the trunk and roots of the Aquilaria Malaccensis tree when it becomes infected with the parasitic mold Phaeoacremonium parasitica.
The healthy, uninfected wood is light and pale in color.
When the tree is becoming infected by the mold (fungus) it develops an aromatic resin as a response to the attack, greatly increasing the wood’s weight and density while changing color to dark brown or nearly black.
Agar wood as such has long played an important role especially in Middle Eastern and Asian cultures.
It has been used around the world for thousands of years in religious traditions and for curing diseases.
Its fragrant wood has been treasured and worshiped as sacred, most precious wood, often valued higher than gold.
Along with many proven health benefits of Agar it can be considered one of the most valuable natural resources in the tropical rain forest. The Japanese people call the wood ‘Jinko’ while the highest quality being ‘Kyara’.
Common Names for Gaharu: Agar wood, Aloes wood, Eaglewood, Adlerholz (German), Oud, Oudh (Arabic), Jinko (Japanese), Chen Xiang (Chinese)
Gaharu (Agar) wood chips and chunks can be steeped to produce a tea and coffee which is known for its numerous health benefits. It is often said to help calming the digestive system, especially relieving the symptoms of constipation.
Gaharu chips incense is often burned to create a welcoming peaceful surrounding along with an earthy smell.
The Asian Agar tree (Aquilaria Malaccensis) is a tall, ever-green tree that can grow up to 40 meters high with a trunk diameter of up to 1.5-2.5 meters. It can be found in the tropical rain forests of Malaysia and other tropical countries. As the tree is extremely rare, the prices for the wood are very high. Agarwood (Gaharu) is now probably the most precious wood in the world. The essential oil that can be extracted from Gaharu wood is used as a base component in perfumes and is sold for prices of several hundred US$ for a few milliliters.
