About the inspiration for
the feature stamp : Hummingbirds are the only
birds that can actually fly backwards! As a matter of fact, the PO's
36-page 1992 Commemorative Stamps book points out that, "Hummingbirds,
nature's tiniest representatives of the bird family, can fly swiftly or slowly .
. . up, down, sideways, backyard, or forward. They can
hover in place, like miniature helicopters, their wings whirring at an
incredible 50 to 80 beats per second." And
not only that, but, believe it or not, "Hummingbirds
have been clocked in a wind tunnel at a speed of 27 miles per hour."
That being said, the Ruby Throated Hummingbird, one of the
5 stamps in the PO’s 5-stamp Hummingbird set, lives throughout the eastern half
of the U.S. and in parts of California

on this one, we see one of these aptly named ruby throated hummingbirds
above a ruby-red flower.
About the hand painted
cachet :
on his ever-so-attractively colored, all-over, hand painted
cachet, Mr. Bevil spotlights one of these delicate winged-wonders in the
process of pollinating a purple flower . . . and
all of this, set against an absolutely Heavenly colored light and dark green
backdrop.
About the cancellation : and for this one, Mr. Bevil obtained a perfectly positioned, individually hand
stamped cancel from our nation’s capital.
