ABOUT THIS COVER

The feature stamp on this on this hand painted masterpiece of an all-over FDC, by Julian Pugh, is PO's 1993 Canvasback Duck high-denomination $15.00 Federal Duck stamp, Scott # RW-60 . . . and affixed on this cover with a $60.00 Plate Block, no less.

About the inspiration for the feature stamp : the delicate canvasback duck, which, when fully grown, weighs, on average, from 2 to 3½ pounds, derives its name from the woven appearance of its feathered wings, which resemble weaves in a canvas.

About the feature stamp : this dreamy stamp spotlights a male (the one with the red head, black neck, and white feathers) and his female mate, as they take a leisurely stroll in a marshy lake, which is close to their typical breeding ground.

About the combo stamp : and for this one, Mr. Pugh teamed up with the PO’s 1993 Red Squirrel stamp, Scott # 2489, from the PO's Flora and Fauna series.

About the  all-over, hand painted cachet : on this all-over marvel of an FDC, crafted on a size-10 envelope, Mr. Pugh shows us an adorable image of a mommy and daddy duck spending some quality time at a tranquil lake setting, with their three chicks, in a Garden-of-Eden type setting, as the sun rises to mark the beginning of a new day in Paradise.

Accompanying this cover will be Mr. Pugh's 8-paragraph, approximately 715-word insert, the first three paragraphs of which I scanned for you. As you could see, Mr. Pugh's goes into great detail as he thoroughly explains every facet of these fragile ducks. Then later, in his 6th and 7th paragraphs, he explains the origins of the Federal Duck system and how it evolved over the years. And finally, in his concluding paragraph, he explains his inspiration for his cachet and the painting process which he used.

About the special cancellation : and you just have to be impressed with Mr. Pugh's perfectly positioned flying canvasback pictorial cancel . . . sand from Washington DC's Duck Stamp Station, of all places.

About the Scarcity Factor : please note that Mr. Pugh made only 10 of these hardly-ever-seen FDCs.

All in all, most definitely, an FDC that has it all, as the old expression goes . . . $60.00 Plate Block, and all.

INTERESTING TIDBIT : on page 60, in the July-August, 2015 issue of First Days the Hobby publication put out by the AFDCS . . .  the American First Day Cover Society ) the talented writer, Alan Warren wrote a full-page article praising Julian Pugh --- who, sadly, passed away that year, on July 3rd --- for his contributions to the Hobby, And in Mr. Warren's very enlightening article, he went on to mention that, in addition to his cachet making, Mr. Pugh was about as accomplished and as selfless as a human being as one could possibly be, as he notes that Mr. Pugh, ". . . became a top salesman and then-vice-president of a sales for homebuilding firm, Superior Homes," and that "despite his time-consuming vocation and hobby, Julian found the time to be a youth minister to teens." Not only that, but Mr. Pugh ". . . later served as a mentor to recovering drug and alcohol addicts, even visiting them in jail when they slipped back."
