LOOKING BACK AT …
THE GREAT WAR, 1914-1918
(FRANK MANDERS)
This
photographic record shows the city of Newcastle during the unexpectedly long
and devastating First World War. There
are pictures of some of the local regiments who had to wave goodbye at Central
Station on their way to fight for their country. On the home front, women are shown
undertaking jobs such as tram conductor or munitions worker which had formerly
been male preserves. Finally, there are
scenes of victory celebrations and of two of Newcastle’s best-known war
memorials being unveiled.
These
stirring times changed the lives of many, and Looking back at the Great War,
1914-1918 is a fitting commemoration of them.
