Background:
Zachariah Brigden was born on 21 December 1734,
in Charlestown, Massachusetts, United States, and apprenticed with Thomas
Edwards. His father, Michael Brigden, was 36 and his mother, Winifred Sprague,
was 34. He was probably free as a journeyman when his master died in 1755, and
in 1759 married Edward’s daughter Sarah, who was the principal beneficiary of
her father’s estate. His records, now archived in Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript
Library Yale University, indicate that his shop employed 15 journeymen and
apprentices, doing more business with repairs than in creation of new works. He
died on 11 March 1787, in Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States,
at the age of 52.
