On a Strictly One-of-a-Kind FDC

ABOUT THIS COVER

The feature stamps on this hand drawn, hand painted . . . and Strictly One-of-a-Kind . . . FDC by Judith Fogt are 4 of the PO's 1988 Carousel Animals stamps, Scott 2090-93.

About the inspiration for the feature stamps : these 4 stamps are from the PO's American Folk Art series, which began in 1977 with the Pueblo Pottery set of 4. These 4 stamps call attention to the art of creating carousel animals which we so life-like that everyone . . . children and adults . . . were magically drawn to them.

The actual stamps : that being said, let me now list the specific stamps for you in Scott order :

  1. Scott # 2090 : the Antlered Deer, which was created in 1895 . . . shown on the bottom, left-side stamp
  2. Scott # 2091 : the Carousel Horse, created in 1917 . . . depicted on the bottom, right-side stamp
  3. Scott # 2092 : the Carousel Camel, also created in 1917 . . . highlighted on the top, left-side stamp
  4. Scott # 2093 : the Sharp-Horned Goat, created in 1880 . . . as seen on the top, right-side stamp

About the hand-drawn,  hand painted cachet  using an absolutely intense color scheme, Mr. Fogt her own carousel horse, with an energetic look on its face, as it seems ever so eager to entertain children and adults, alike, with an exciting and adventurous ride.

About the awesome cancel : and for this, Mrs. Fogt obtained a well positioned bar cancel from Sandusky, Ohio.

About the Scarcity Factor : and as noted above, this is a strictly One-of-a-Kind FDC.

All in all, a truly top-notch piece of philatelic art.

INTERESTING TIDBIT : actually, today's carousel . . . or the merry-go-round, if you prefer . . . was inspired by a 12th Century Arabian game called carosellos. The original Arabian game of Carousel consisted of real-live horsemen who continuously rode in circles as they passed perfume-filled balls from one horseman to the next. The purpose of the game was to pass the ball of perfume, while vigorously riding, without breaking the ball and, thereby, spilling the perfume. The last horseman with his ball of fully intact was the winner. (Sounds sort of crazy, doesn't it, but, nevertheless, that was the origin of what, today, we call the Carousel.)
