ABOUT THIS COVER

The feature stamp on this hand drawn and individually hand painted, Super-Scare, all-over FDC by Joanne Bruce is the PO's 1991 Tractor Trailer of the 1930s coil stamp, Scott # 2457, which is part of PO's prolific History of Transportation in America series which began in 1981 with the 2-seated, 4-wheeled Surry Carriage of the 1890s and ended in 1995 with the Cog Railway Car of the 1870s.

About the inspiration for the stamp : actually, the first really serious American used tractors were steam-powered, but in 1892 John Froelich of Clayton County, Iowa, invented the very first gas-powered tractor. Twenty-five years later, in 1917, Henry Ford produced the very first mass-marketed tractor, which he called simply, the Fordson. By the decade of the 1930s, tractor-trailers were commonly-seen vehicles of America's quickly-expanding highways.

About the hand drawn, hand painted, all-over cachet : on her all-over, very rarely-seen cachet, Mrs. Bruce gives us her philatelic shout-out to the early 20th Century trucking industry, as she displays for us her expertly hand drawn and lavishly painted King's Hams - Bacon truck leaving the King Company's warehouse to deliver some mouth-watering goodies to grocery stores, both near-and-far.

About the Double Cancels : also very impressive is Mrs. Bruce’s obtaining of two perfectly positioned, individually hand stamped cancels from Secaucus, New Jersey

About the Scarcity Factor : please note that Mrs. Bruce made only 14 of these gems, with this particular cover having been numbered 3/14.

All in all : a masterfully laid-out cachet which puts us very much in-touch with the vitally significant role of America's trucking industry.
