HARDY is one of the oldest brands specializing in fly fishing. HARDY is somewhat the flagship of English brands of fly fishing gear and the meeting point between history and modern technology by blending "vintage" and modern technique.

In 1872, the HARDY legend was born when William Hardy moved as a gunsmith in Alnwick, Northumberland, England. Quickly joined a year later by his brother John James who brought his engineering talents, the two brothers then introduced themselves as armourists, blacksmiths, and cutlers. The weapons are made at the time in Birmingham.

July 26, 1874 marks a major turning point in HARDY's history, the newspaper ""Alnwick Mercury"" dedicates an article to announce that the Hardy brothers are starting a trade in high-quality gunsmiths, rod and reel makers for river and sea fly fishing and waiting for orders and customers. The company then grew rapidly all over the world in the image of the British Empire at that time. As the company grew, William and John James chose to divide the workload based on their talents, with William handling paperwork, administrative and financial, and J.J. handling product development and human side as CEO. A third brother, Forster joins the adventure and takes over the reel department. The company was then run with an iron fist by the three brothers, building brand awareness on a solid foundation.

Forster invented a revolutionary reel, the Perfect, using a ball movement for the first time in the fishing world. As HARDY was best known at the time for its fly rods, the Perfect helped give HARDY a notoriety regarding reels. HARDY Company is a master of engineering but also marketing thanks to the combined skills of the three brothers who are also experienced fly fishermen who have proven themselves by winning several medals by entering numerous fly fishing competitions.

At that time, each cane consisted of approximately 25 pieces of bamboo, each year Hardy imported and stored over 30,000 pieces of bamboo intended exclusively for its fly fishing rods.

As early as the 1885s, Hardy offered a comprehensive catalog each year summarizing all products manufactured by the brand and distributing these catalogues in many countries around the world. Hardy's strong point was to write in his catalogues the stories and opinions of many expert and reputable fishermen, which contributed greatly to increased sales and athlete interest in the products.

By 1900, Hardy had warehouses in Edinburgh and Manchester in addition to premises in Alnwick and London and by the 1920s the Hardy network stretched from Brussels to China to Australia.

Beginning in 1930, HARDY became a global company and a major force in the fly fishing world. The firm already offers high quality products in an incredible variety. In 1934, for example, 6 varieties of fly fishing reels were listed in the catalog, in over 40 different formats, over 90 different models of rods for trout fly fishing, and over 30 for salmon fly fishing. This diversity of production is so great that Hardy even owns a factory to make his silks from silkworms in Spain in Murcia.

During the first decades of the company's existence, all business activities were consolidated in Alnwick. Subsequently, Hardy established itself in many countries and cities with for example the famous shop dedicated exclusively to fly fishing at 61 Pall Mall in London which became as famous as the famous Northumberland factory.

Even though today Hardy is no longer a family business, the firm continues to value its tradition as well as the endless quest for perfection by combining technical modernity and history.
