Offered here is a sizeable space-flown Thermal Protection System Strain Isolation Pad (SIP Pad) removed from the Space Shuttle orbiter Endeavour.  This complete component, which was located better the heat shield tile and the aluminum hull of the ship, was damaged on mission STS-77 which flew in space between 19-26 May, 1996.  The tile and pad were destructively removed on March 11th, 1997 while preparing the ship for flight (STS-88).


This SIP Pad was located on the spacecraft's vertical stabilizer.


The pad was destructively removed, causing it to retain pieces of the tile on its exterior. The specimen displays internal Kevlar fibres, red RTV bonding material,  gray bonding surface and white silica tile making this a colorful and interesting  display specimen.  A superb, museum quality artifact and educational piece!
