These early swords and knives are not perfect, they may have been painted. taken apart, lost handle wrap or wire, cracked or pieces of handle missing, chrome or nickel plated. rusty, pitted, sharpened, may have been in fire, bent, scratched, battle scars, soldered, abused and what ever happened in their 170 years plus years existence.
