Description
This is a choice, “Crown” or “Silver Dollar” plus size, very old, "One Thaler" from the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle in Germany. It was struck at the Nienburg mint in 1628 during the 1611 until 1633 reign of Duke Christian “The Elder”. The jolly Santa Claus looking guy on the coin.
This coin was struck during the “Thirty Years' War” fought from 1618 until the “Peace of Westphalia” in 1648. It devastated much of Europe, and the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg wasn't spared. Early in the conflict, Duke Christian here joined, with Duke Frederick of Holstein, the side of the Emperor and became “Colonel” of the Lower Saxon Circle troops.
