Ben Wade – HAND MODEL Freehand
LONDON MADE, From Charatan's Era
Made 1965-71, with Charatan Styling
Extraordinaire Dublin, Saddle Stem
Full Straight-Grain, VERY NEAR MINT

Offering a wonderful looking Ben Wade a HAND MODEL, which is LONDON MADE during the Charatan era. This pipe is somewhat rare, as it was made during the timeframe of 1965-1971, when they were produced by the famous English pipe company of Charatan, who was then owned by Lane Ltd. The shape is reminiscent of Charatan. It’s an extraordinaire sized Dublin, with a gently curved saddle stem, very nice design. I included a photo of a Charatan catalog page, which shows both Charatan and Ben Wade together. The bowl has a smooth finish, and a rich tan color, and has a full surround of straight grain. The bowl is in excellent condition, with no noted wear, very slight normal use showing. The inside looks great, and the draw hole bottom center, should be an excellent smoker! The stem is made of vulcanite, is in great condition with just a hint of use, nicely hand-cut as well. Weights in around 3.0 ounces. Excellent early Ben Wade from Charatan's Make era, one of the nicer ones I've seen. Expertly reconditioned, polished and ready to smoke!

I offer Pipe Consignment, message me for details, if interested!
Please see my other Auctions! Combined shipping of multiple items no problem, wait until auctions end to pay, and I’ll send a combined invoice! Additional cleaning may be desired on some pipes, as I focus on the exterior reconditioning and reaming, and leave the shank interior to the new owner, pipe stand not included with any pipe. Click photos BELOW to enlarge, and see more photos! Returns OK before you smoke any pipe.

Pipes bearing the label Ben Wade were made in Leeds, England, at least as early as 1922. The Leeds company was purchased by Charatan in 1965, which itself had been purchased by Lane Ltd in 1962. In this period, production of Ben Wade pipes in the UK moved to London.
As of 1965, Lane Ltd effectively owned the rights to the Ben Wade label in the U.S. and famous Danish pipemaker Preben Holm made pipes bearing this label for Lane from about 1972-89.
