Description

This is a nice, very near crisp uncirculated, "Ten Cents", Series 661, "Military Payment Certificate" that was issued by the United States Government. Series 661 was used exclusively in Vietnam and was first issued October 21, 1968. It became obsolete on August 11, 1969.

Military Payment Certificates were used from 1946 until 1973. All United States servicemen, government civilian employees and citizens employed by US firms doing business under government contracts were paid in Military Payment Certificates. They were also prohibited from holding any normal United States Currency of any type.

In the 28-year history of the Military Payment Certificates there were 13 series issued. They were used in 21 different foreign places in 17 countries.

"World War II Allied Military Currency" by Raymond S. Toy & Carlton F. Schwan. (Fourth Edition). #78.
They say 23,520,000 of these were delivered.
"Standard Catalog of World Paper Money" (Specialized Issues) by Albert Pick. #M-65.

Face: Series 661 • B14596045B • Sheet Position 61 • Blue and violet on multicolor underprint. • Young women wearing scarf. • These were printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

The local population was prohibited from holding Military Payment Certificates as a control on the Black Market. However, many pieces of it still reached the locals. When it was determined that there was an excessive amount, the old Series would be withdrawn and a new series issued. These were called "C-Days" and they were unannounced. Personnel would be restricted to the base and the exchange of old for new notes would take place. After the "C-Day" the old notes would be worthless.

Back: MILITARY PAYMENT CERTIFICATE.

The Note: It has a “smudge” and some wrinkles at the left edge but has never been folded. Bright and fully crisp, it has no edge or body tears and no pinholes. The note will be sent in a new currency holder that protects it. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
