Here’s a very early pipe by WDC (William DeMuth & Co.) and early USA maker out of New York City. The dating on this pipe is hard to narrow down, but likely sometime in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. The stamping on this is very minimal, just the triangle WDC logo, no other markings. It was common on very early pipes, to have few markings, but in the 1910’s to 1920’s makers tended to add shape numbers and models, etc. I’ve included a 1919 ad page, just to give you a feel of the early shapes from WDC. These early American makes hold a place in my heart as a U.S. collector, and the WDC Company was a formidable U.S. pipe maker, in business from 1862 to 1972. The pipe a great retro design. I guess it would be called a bulldog, based on the bowl, and has a diamond shank and stem in a classic early “S” curve. Some relate this to a Sherlock Holms style. The bowl exterior has a smooth finish in a rich golden-brown stain, and show off some pretty mixed grain, swirls and birdseye. The bowl interior is well-seasoned, the draw hole is bottom center, draws easy and should be a nice smoker. The stem is original, made of vulcanite. The bit has just a hint of use, elliptical shape button, which was common in very early stem design. It has an inner-tube which extends right to the back of the bowl, and it draws easy. Has an early design screw mount. The weighs in about 1.55 ounces, is ready to enjoy. A great Early USA Collectors pipe!
