Seed Pretreatment:
- Before planting, it’s essential to pretreat the seeds:
- Remove the wings from the seeds.
- Soak the seeds in very warm water (not too hot) for 24 hours.
- If you plan to plant them outdoors in spring, store them in a paper bag in a cool, dark place over winter.
- For indoor planting, skip the winter storage and proceed immediately.
Planting Options:
- You have two choices:
- Outdoors: Sow the seeds directly into a seedbed that has been weeded and leveled. Alternatively, use pots filled with quality seed compost. Place the pots in a protected area (like a cold frame) for germination in spring.
- Indoors: Plant the seeds in containers filled with a fluffy, high-drainage soil mix.
Soil and Light Conditions:
- Use a fertile, well-draining soil mix with a slightly acidic pH (around 5.5 to 6.5).
- Provide partial shade exposure for the planting area.
Germination and Care:
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Once germination occurs, thin out the seedlings if needed.
- As your new trees grow, they’ll surprise you with their unique characteristics. Remember that they won’t necessarily reproduce named cultivars.
