Steel                     - Tamahagane; Hand forged / forged  carbon steel sandwiched with ground iron 

 

It seems that there was an engraving of the brand/ smith's name on the blade, but it probably disappeared due to rusting.

There crack lines on the verge of en eye, this is because of shrinkage of ground Iron. I don't think  that part will break easily because it seems the inside of the crack still fixes with the blade. Please note that this axe is over 100 years old.
