This auction is for a photo of Eldon Palmer sitting in the 1971 Dodge Challenger OFFICIAL PACE CAR of the 55th INDIANAPOLIS 500 MILE RACE  MAY 29,1971. Astronaut John Glenn had survived being shot into Space, flying numerous Combat Missions during World War II and the Korean war,but almost lost his life riding in this Pace Car,along with Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony Hulman,ABC correspondent Chris Schenkel and the driver Eldon Palmer (local car dealer). Palmer had practiced his approach to the infield, placing a marker at the point where he would have to start braking from the over 100 mph speed needed to lead the race cars. Later Palmer would say that someone removed the marker, causing him to continue toward a temporary stand full of photographers at 125 MPH . He hit the brakes too late and locked them propelling the car uncontrollably into the stand. Nobody was killed, but 30 photographers were injured, several seriously. The front end of the car was heavily damaged. Instead of gifting the Pace Car to Al Unser Sr.,who won the race,as was tradition,Palmer gave Unser a yellow Charger and kept the Challenger. This was the only time a Pace Car crashed during the Indianapolis 500 .The photo is on Premium Photo Paper (4" x 6") made from my original slide dated JUNE 1971. U.S. Property Copyright Law applies. The white strip will not be shown in the photo that is sent. Nice nostalgic look back into 1970s  Auto Racing History.
