Description

This is a veteran, series of 1923, "Twenty-Five Cent Note". They were called "Shinplasters" by the people, from the "Dominion of Canada". The series of 1923 was the last printing of these Canadian Fractional Currency notes.

These 1923's were the only fractional notes to carry serial numbers. This note was signed by S. P. McCavour and J. C. Saunders.

"Standard Catalog of World Paper Money" (General Issues 1368-1960) by Albert Pick. #11b.

Face: 521869 • C • Black on brown underprint. • Series A-1 • Britannia holding trident at center. • Printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company Limited.

The first issue of "Shinplasters" as they came to be called, was an "Emergency" Issue in 1870 as the government wanted to call in the large amounts of United States silver coins that had migrated to Canada during the Civil War and were then still in circulation. The US Dollar was only worth 0.80¢ Canadian and unsuspecting citizens were disappointed when they went to bank the coins to find themselves faced with a 20% loss. The fractional issue was a "stopgap" idea to fill the void while new coins were minted. It was opposed by the banks and was never intended to be more than a temporary measure.

But the public liked the "Shinplasters" and the small notes were found useful in many ways and, instead of being systematically withdrawn, the government was compelled to print further issues in 1900 and 1923.

Back: Green. • Lathe work and counters.

The Note: A veteran that saw long service. It has some tears and pinholes. The note will be sent in a new currency holder that protects it. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
