Very rare and original, 1865 / 1880’s Bronze Andrew Johnson Peace Medal – an example of the largest diameter (3”- 75mm) and thickest rim (7mm) version of this Peace Medal in outstanding, original condition.

The obverse of this original, Andrew Johnson Peace Medal features a profile bust portrait of Andrew Johnson surrounded by text that reads "Andrew Johnson, President of the United States, 1865". The name of the designer / engraver - “Paquet” - appears below the bust of Johnson at the left. The reverse features an image of two figures clasping hands in front of a bust of George Washington. The right figure represents the Federal Government and is surrounded by symbols of industry, with a locomotive in the background. The left figure, representing American Indians, stands among weapons cast aside and a herd of buffalo in the background. The Washington bust is on a plinth reading "Peace" surrounded by olive branches.

The Medal is made of Bronze and weighs 7.9 ounces. It measures approx. 3” (75mm) in diameter and is 7mm thick at the raised rim.

With a frozen date of 1865, the Andrew Johnson Peace Medals were struck during the 19th century in very small numbers each year, perhaps in groups of 3 or 4 or even one at a time. The medal has an extremely thick edge as it was struck using an extremely thick planchet / flan. The thickness of the medal measures 7 mm, in part due to the high rims. Still this is much thicker than 20th century strikes of the large US Mint medals which are generally 4.5-5.5 mm.

Our best guess is that the Medal offered here was struck in the 4th quarter of the 19th century. This is NOT a modern Mint strike but features a fantastic, rich and warm surface patina that can only be acquired through decades of age.

Please Note: The Andrew Johnson Peace Medal offered here is unconditionally guaranteed authentic and original. The Medal is backed by our “no questions asked” return policy and lifetime guarantee of authenticity. The Medal is unconditionally guaranteed to be deemed authentic by any third party authentication service and the Medal will be accompanied by our own Letter of Authenticity with a statement of our unconditional return policy and guarantee of authenticity.

This very rare and original, Andrew Johnson Peace Medal is in excellent condition. The strike is strong and the medal well preserved overall with just a hint of wear to the highest points of the strike. The surfaces retain their rich and warm, age appropriate patina with no indication that the Medal have ever been cleaned.

A Very Rare and original, 19th century, Bronze Andrew Johnson Peace Medal – an example of the largest diameter (3”- 75mm) and thickest rim (7mm) version of this Peace Medal – and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
