This early 20th century German “bubble dish” is similar to a bread board, but is carved with a shallow bowl and wide lipped edge. Unlike flat English bread boards, where the bread would be traditionally cut on the board on the dinner table as it was needed. This bread dish would have instead been used to serve pre-cut slices of bread to accompany a main course or soup.

The border is carved with “give us this day our daily bread” in German.

The dish has signs of age and wear but is in fair condition for its age.
