The Royal Bank of Scotland was founded in 1727 and
immediately competed strongly with the already well-established Bank of
Scotland. It took over the Dundee
Banking Company in 1864, and then in the 1920s and 1930s acquired several
English Banks – namely Drummonds Bank in 1924, William Deacons Bank as well as
the Western Branch of the Bank of England in 1930, and Glyn Mills & Co. in
1939. More recently it merged with the
National Commercial Bank of Scotland Ltd. in 1969 when it became the Royal Bank
of Scotland Limited. In February 2000
the Royal Bank of Scotland took over the National Westminster Bank leading to
the formation of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group.
