The Royal Bank of Scotland was founded in 1727 and immediately competed strongly with the already well-established Bank of Scotland.  It took over the Dundee Banking Company in 1864, and then in the 1920s and 1930s acquired several English Banks – namely Drummonds Bank in 1924, William Deacons Bank as well as the Western Branch of the Bank of England in 1930, and Glyn Mills & Co. in 1939.  More recently it merged with the National Commercial Bank of Scotland Ltd. in 1969 when it became the Royal Bank of Scotland Limited.  In February 2000 the Royal Bank of Scotland took over the National Westminster Bank leading to the formation of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group.

Obverse (front) – Brown on a multicoloured underprint.  Bank’s Coat of Arms to right. 

Reverse (back) – Brown; illustration of Glamis Castle.

Grading – GVF – An attractive note, but with some evidence of handling and wear. May have several folds both vertically and horizontally. Paper itself is still relatively crisp and not floppy. There are no tears into the border area.

Size – 153mm x 85mm approximately.
