Richmond Turner

Led the Invasion of Saipan

June 15, 1944

R ichmond Turner (1885-1961) was a bril- liant strategist who devised the technique of amphibious warfare during World War II. Between 1942 and 1945, he planned and personally conducted successful assaults on Japanese-held islands, including Saipan in the Marianas.

A career Navy officer, Turner graduated fifth in his class from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1908. He was an air-minded officer and earned his wings at the Naval Aviation School in Pensacola, Florida in 1927. He then led an aircraft squadron of the Asian fleet and commanded the USS Jason.

Turner was ordered to the South Pacific in 1942. Aware that no one in the U.S. armed forces knew anything about island fighting, he relied on his own resourcefulness and ingenuity to devise a workable strategy. He organized the transports and supply ships, and drew up the preliminary land force moves for the assaults on the Solomon, Gilbert, and

Marshall Islands. From there, he turned to Saipan, which the Allies needed as a base for the Navy and Army Air Force.

Some 32,000 Japanese defenders were on Saipan, a rocky island with hills and many caves. Turner's assault plan called for heavy aerial bombardment fol- lowed by a massive landing involving 535 ships and 127,000 Marines and Army soldiers. The attack began on June 15, 1944. Because of the terrain, it was a slow, costly battle. Finally, on July 9, the island was under American control.

Turner's strategy was equally successful on Iwo Jima and the Marshall Islands. He was promoted to full admiral in 1945.

The 3¢ stamp on this Cover, underscoring American resolve to "win the war," was issued on July 4, 1942. The Cover is postmarked in Honolulu, Hawaii on the anniversary of the amphibious assault on Saipan organized by Admiral Richmond Turner.
