A flyer produced
by Richard D'Oyly Carte inviting managements of regional venues to make
engagements for a concert party due to tour Britain in early January
1878. Led by contralto Eliza Enriquez, the company would also include
two key future members of the Carl Rosa opera company, soprano Rose Hersee
and tenor Barton McGuckin as well as bass Cecil Tovey, flautist Mr
Keppel and pianist and conductor E. Bending. The 8” by 10” flyer has been
folded a number of times and will be shipped folded along one of those pre-established
creases. On the reverse are handwritten Carte’s name and two dates in October
1877. There are a few small holes and marks not affecting the text.
*This item was formerly in the collection of John Cannon, the respected G&S collector and researcher who died in 2021. He left instructions that all collectors should have a chance to acquire the treasures in his collection, which will therefore be auctioned here over the next year or so by StageMemories and PaperJoys. to reduce the shipping costs for you, but please note that when multiple
items reach a high total value I may ask you to insure the package. If you want
a service not stated, such as first class or surface mail, please ask for a
quote. In
all cases please discuss with me before making your payment. The maximum
possible level of insurance on items sent overseas with Royal Mail is £250.
If the total value of contents exceeds this figure then you will have to
accept the risk of sending the item(s), or choose an alternative courier.
