The Cane measures approx. 35" long overall with the “L shaped” handle of the Cane measuring approx. 3 1/2” long. The Cane is fashioned from a tree limb with areas that are stripped of bark creating a smooth and undulating surface. Near the top of the shaft there is a flat, 1 3/4” wide sterling silver “ribbon” that spirals around the shaft twice – a raised image of a dog and another of an elephant adorn this ribbon of silver.

    The Cane came to us with an identification tag that is dated November 14, 1943 with manuscript text that reads “Sweet-wood. 35” long – silver spiral of dog and Elephant, symbol of the Republican Party / I won this as an election bet backing McKinley against Wm. Jennings Bryan before the Spanish War – It was my favorite cane for years as a young man at a period when a gentleman was not considered fully clothed unless he carried a cane.     The entire cane is fashioned from a single piece of wood and the Folk Art style makes for a very attractive piece.

    This rare and original, 19th century Political Campaign Cane is in very good condition with a beautiful warm and rich age patina and a pattern of wear consistent with handling over approx. 130 years. There are no breaks, chips, damage or repairs of any kind to the wood but there is honest, age appropriate wear to the surface. The silver attachment is well preserved but tarnished and the Cane retains its original ferule. The original paper tag is a bit worn and partially split horizontally.
