This outstanding, 19th century Sioux Pouch measures approx. 7 3/4" long (including its beaded drops) and 3 1/4” wide at the top edge. The Bag is sinew sewn and made of a thick and supple, brain tanned hide. It features traditional, Sioux geometric patterns on the front side executed using red white-heart, chalk white, medium blue and cobalt blue colored seed beads on a chalk white field. The sides are trimmed with rolled beadwork in colors of pea green, chalk white and cobalt blue. The Pouch retains its original flap closure which is trimmed with a delicate border of red white-heart beads, and its original rawhide ties. The Bottom of the Pouch is finished with rolled tin cone fringe with dyed horse hair inserts as well as with bead decorated drops at the corners that are also finished with the same tin cones.

    The Pouch is the typical size and shape of a Reservation Ration Coupon Case / Bag or Mirror Bag and came to us with the fantastic, 1905 Sioux Reservation Ration Card that we are also offering for sale this week on eBay. However, the Pouch is slightly shorter than the Ration Card and we believe that it was originally a Mirror Bag rather than a Ration Pouch.

    This very rare and original, 1890’s Sioux Bead Decorated Pouch / Mirror Bag is in excellent condition. All of the hide elements are well preserved - sound and supple with no damage or repairs of any kind but with some age appropriate surface soiling. The beadwork is beautiful and also well preserved with no loss or damage of any kind. All of the rolled, tin cones are present although there is some loss to some of the inserted horse hair tufts. The Bag retains its original rawhide ties. All elements of the Bag are original and there has been no repairs or restorations.
