The molded designs on the front and back of the Case are identical and features a central, stained glass window type design element. The central “window” is surrounded by an elaborate, tiny checkerboard field and a drape style outer border. The Case is a dark and rich black color and the surface retains its original, bright shine.
The Case is identified by Berg as Berg “3-149 Geometric”.
While the Case now contains a Daguerreotype portrait, it would make a beautiful presentation for any cherished Daguerreotype, Ambrotype or Tintype.
This very rare and beautiful, 1850's Union Case displays nicely but is in good condition only. There is a central crack on the back side of the case that that extends to the lower right hand corners of the side rails. There is also a small chip in the side rail at the latch and some roughness along the edges of the Case. The case closes squarely and latches tightly. Although this sounds like a large number of issues, the case actually displays very nicely. As stated above the Case contains a Daguerreotype portrait of a young man identified as John Clarke Prescott – that Dag exhibits surface wipes and scratches as can be seen in the scans below.
A very rare and original, 1850’s Sixth Plate, Geometric Figural Gutta Percha / Thermoplastic Daguerreotype Union Case and, with all faults, still a nice addition to any collection!!
